My morning runs take me along Kits Beach in Vancouver and last year a new feature was added to this scenic running route…people standing in the middle of the ocean! Dozens of people were standing on what I could only assume to be a surf board and paddling (I of course later learned they were Stand Up Paddle boards, not surf boards). Over the course of the summer I continued to stumble along the sandy path trying to keep up a good running pace while I watched the Stand Up Paddlers do their thing. They looked so peaceful. My desire to get out there and try this grew every day, but having never been one to engage in a “water sport” of any kind, I figured I wouldn’t fare too well and so dismissed the idea.

Then one day a friend showed me a photo of herself doing SUP while drinking a cup of coffee! And it was only her second time out ever. I now had no excuse…how hard could it be? And so I was determined to try it and last week I had the opportunity to do so. I attended Wake Up SUP’s intro to SUP workshop and in a nutshell I’m already hooked! The class was relaxed, instruction was clear and we were on the water in no time. It took me about 15 minutes to get the hang of it and there were plenty of options if you didn’t get it right away: you could kneel down on the board and paddle that way, or even lie down if you needed to. But eventually you want to stand…because there is something exhilarating about standing and gliding over a body of water. It was so calming yet you are getting a wonderful workout without even realizing it which is a great combo. So whether your goal is to just have a little fun, to try and relax, or to get a little exercise, trying SUP is a must!
